Late in the summer of 1999, West Reading firefighters were trained in water rescue technicques by members of Shillington Fire Company. Here, Assistant Chief Daniel Strause learns how to throw a rope bag to the opposite "shore" of the simulated "creek." The goal is to stretch a rope line across, which a floating victim can grab on to. |

Firefighter Jeremy Rapp was one of the most successful participants at getting the rope bag across the pool. |

In this photo, firefighter Ronald Adams is learning the best way to keep an unconscious victim afloat and bring him to shore. |

Firefighters Jeremy Rapp, Andrew Tharp, Ryan Talarico, Rick Quattrock, Mike Cardell and Ronald Adams (clockwise from the head of the "victim") learn how to safely prepare a water-rescued victim for transport to the hospital. |

Here, firefighters Tharp (left) and Rapp are trained how to use an air-filled hose line as a bouyant rope substitute, a very effective way of bringing a conscious victim to shore. |

A cap on the end of the hose keeps the pressurized air inside. The hose floats, making it easy for the victim to reach. |
