Water Rescue Training

Late in the summer of 1999, West Reading firefighters were trained in water rescue technicques by members of Shillington Fire Company. Here, Assistant Chief Daniel Strause learns how to throw a rope bag to the opposite "shore" of the simulated "creek." The goal is to stretch a rope line across, which a floating victim can grab on to.

Firefighter Jeremy Rapp was one of the most successful participants at getting the rope bag across the pool.

In this photo, firefighter Ronald Adams is learning the best way to keep an unconscious victim afloat and bring him to shore.

Firefighters Jeremy Rapp, Andrew Tharp, Ryan Talarico, Rick Quattrock, Mike Cardell and Ronald Adams (clockwise from the head of the "victim") learn how to safely prepare a water-rescued victim for transport to the hospital.

Here, firefighters Tharp (left) and Rapp are trained how to use an air-filled hose line as a bouyant rope substitute, a very effective way of bringing a conscious victim to shore.

A cap on the end of the hose keeps the pressurized air inside. The hose floats, making it easy for the victim to reach.
