In early January 2000, the assistance of West Reading's ladder truck was requested by Shartlesville Fire Company to help put out a silo fire. This stubborn fire had been burning off and on since November 1999! Unfortunately, we were not successful, and had to retreat due to the imminent danger of the silo collapsing.

Lieutenant David Miliauskas advances the hose line up the "stick." At the end of the hose is a special "Navy" nozzle which will penetrate the interior of the silo and shower water onto the fire. |

Shartlesville's pumper supplied the water, and their tanker stood ready to supply more if it would be needed. |

The height of the silo and the position where we had to put our truck due to the layout of the farm forced us to extend the ladder its entire 100 feet out. Once the nozzle was secured in place, all we could do was wait. |

Unfortunately, our efforts did not have much effect. In this photo, our firefighters and Assistant Chief Daniel Strause discuss options. Soon after this photo was taken, we abandoned our efforts due to the advancing state of collapse of the silo. |
