Storm damage from West Virginia
Tuesday, October 30, 2012
The WRFD braced for an impact from the approach of Hurricane Sandy on Monday October 29th, and Sandy left the Borough with a pile of broken branches and twisted wires. West Reading was lucky to escape with minimal damage, but even still the storm knocked out power to the southern part of the Borough and caused some property damage all around the area. Volunteer crews stood by at station most of the day on the 29th and the 30th to serve and protect, and we ended up running 9 calls over those two days.

After a tough month of training for the members, Ladder 64 has been placed into service. Many of the drivers of the 1987 Seagrave have been qualified as operators of the new Crimson. We continue to train as many drivers as we can to get a large pool of operators qualified on the new truck to serve the residents of West Reading. Look for the new truck at an emergency scene near you!!

This morning Company 64 was dispatched to the 400 block of Grape Street for a reported garage fire along with Tower 79, Engine 69, and Engine 85-2. Engine 64 arrived, dropped a 5" supply line at 4th and Chestnut, and then arrived on location. The first crew off the Engine stretched a 2 1/2" attack line and made the initial attack on the fire while Tower 79's crew worked to open up the exposed garage. Fire was contained to the attached garages and some damage to the surrounding homes and apartment building were caused by the extreme heat from the fire. All companies worked to overhaul the structure and find all of the hidden fire in the contents of the garage. Both garages were totally destroyed along with all of their contents. At this time the cause of the fire is ruled "undetermined". Thanks to the crew from Company 55 who stood by for us while we operated at the fire.

The West Reading Fire Department truck's committee visited Spartan ERV's plant in Ephrata, PA for the final inspection of the new ladder truck. The committee was much impressed by the new ladder truck. The committee was able to pump and perform aerial operations with the new ladder as part of the final inspection. Everything worked great and as previous stated the committee was impressed by the new ladder truck. A minimal amount of "punch" list items were identified and will be worked prior to the ladder truck's visit to the Firehouse Expo in Baltimore, MD this coming weekend (7/19 - 7/21). Stop by Baltimore during that time frame! Check back as we will update the site on its arrival at our firehouse!!!
