One of our training nights was spent at our station in a homemade "smoke maze." Here, two members of WRFD set up the smoke maze. They did NOT make it easy, as you'll see in the photos below! |

This does not look like much of a problem now, but shortly after this photo was taken, our entire station was filled with artificial smoke, which reduced visibility to zero. Our members in training were required to follow the rope through the "maze" and overcome obstacles like this. Once the smoke filled the hallway, they could barely see their hands in front of their faces, and even little obstacles like this created a challenge! |

Even more challenging was this obstacle, a hole just big enough for a firefighter to go through...WITHOUT an air pack! Firefighters were forced here to remove their air packs (but, of course, not their masks!), push the air pack through in front of them, crawl through the tunnel and re-don their packs afterward! |

In this photo, you can begin to see the smoke which filled our basement, and eventually our entire station, as firefighter Geneva Miller prepares to enter the basement portion of the maze. |

Firefighter Ron Adams, barely visible amid the artificial smoke permeating the station, fills the firefighters' air cylinders using the cascade system in our squad. |
