On June 23rd the WRFD along with its assisting departments responded to the Bistro 614 at 614 Penn Ave for a reported structure fire. We arrived to find heavy fire conditions from the "D" side and rear of the building and reports that some of the occupants had not yet been accounted for. An interior attack was established by a crew from the Township of Spring Fire Department as well as searches of the building, confirming all occupants were out. Ladder 64 was setup to give crews access to the roof where some ventilation above the fire was performed. Thanks to the quick work of all companies, fire was contained to the building of origin and much of the building was saved from the flames. The West Reading Fire Marshal investigated the cause of the fire and it was determined to be electrical in nature. Thanks to all of the assisting companies that night: 79 (Wyomissing), 69 (Kenhorst), 85 (Spring Twp), 55 (Greenfields), City of Reading, 36 (Shillington), 18 (Western Berks), 42 (Cumru Township), Western Berks Ambulance, and especially the West Reading Police who did a search and did evacuate many of the occupants before we arrived. Also thanks to the Greenfields Fire Company for some great photos of the fire.

Members of the WRFD, assisting departments, government officials, and the public gathered at Station 64 to celebrate the dedication of the new Ladder 64. We first attended the annual Armed Forces Day Parade that wound it's way through West Reading and then gathered at the station for the ceremony and lunch afterward. A special thanks to the Borough's Recreation Commission for all of their help with providing us with the food and decorations for the event, as well as the hard work of the crews to get the station and apparatus cleaned up for the event. On Friday members of the West Reading Borough family gathered to take a photo to support Derrick Redcay, an 18 year old volunteer firefighter with the Goodwill Fire Co who suffered a very rare stroke to his spinal cord on April 24, a day after assisting at a multi-alarm fire in Muhlenburg Township. Please visit the "Derrick Redcay Stong" page on Facebook to show your support.
The WRFD will be conducting hydrant flushing of all hydrants in the Borough starting Wednesday night at 8:00 PM. We should complete the flushing by no later than 11:00 PM each night this week. During the flushing you might experience cloudy or dis-colored water and/or reduced water pressure. The system should return to normal 30 minutes after we complete for the night. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Borough Hall at 610-374-8273.

Tonight members of the WRFD gathered with 10,000 of our closest friends to sing Christmas carols for Delaney Brown, an 8 year old resident of West Reading who is suffering from cancer. Along with the WRPD and assistance from neighboring police and fire police we provided security and traffic control to make the event a success. We keep Laney in our thoughts while she fights this battle and thank you to all that participated to brighten her spirits.
